Soundtrack for "Sea Legs" by The Graduate

We are excited to announce that "The Graduate" will be writing an original soundtrack to our upcoming show "Sea Legs"! We love everything that they do and they are really awesome guys, so the chance to collaborate with them on the music for our show is very exciting. The music Josh and I listen to effects our work heavily and we feel really passionate about giving show-goers the full experience of sight and sound. For those who can't make the opening, we're trying to figure out how to let you hear the music wether it's a digital download or release it on cd with the artwork.

"Sea Legs" Jolby x Ashley Forrette show

We are very pleased to announce a new show with Ashley Forrette called "Sea Legs" at Together Gallery in Portland, OR. It will open February 25th and will run through March.

The show will explore mythology and superstitions of the sea and will combine Ashley's incredible photography and our usual wackiness. We are all working really hard to bring this show to life and are excited to count down the days with you all and share the work as it's created (the above is a crop of the first piece we've created for the show). Yep that's right we are honored to be in Doodler Anonymous Coloring Book Vol.1. We did a feature on their site a couple months ago and they asked us if we would be in their first coloring book. The rest of the book looks awesome can't wait to get my hands on one.

A Week With Jolby

We were asked a couple weeks ago by Doodlers Anonymous if we wanted to do a week with Jolby feature on their site. We agreed and documented a week and to our surprise it turned out pretty cool. Doodlers did an awesome job compiling all our doodles and weird pictures into a great post. Colby and I have been working together as Jolby for a little over two years and for the first time we have been able to work in the same city and it feels really good to look at the pics and see the work we are doing.

Also we just updated our shop with our zine and some new prints. Take a look and if you enjoy or just want to support some fine gentlemen get some stuff!

Thrice "Beggars"

Sorry on the lack of updates. We promise to get back on the ball. Something we haven't done in a while is mention some of the new tunes we are listening to. I am a huge Thrice fan, I would even say they are my favorite band that consistently makes amazing album after album, pushing themselves as artist. Their newest album "Beggars" is another great album to add to their growing catalog. The albums lacks the heavy feel and moves to a more groove base which is a nice change for the band. Stand out tracks are "The Weight" "In Exile" and "Beggars". I definitely recommend you buy the physical cd which comes with 5 bonus tracks that are equally as great as the other tracks. Thrice if you read this for some strange reason we would do anything to do some design and/or illustrations for you =)

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. We've been too busy playing racquetball and documenting a day-in-the-life of Jolby feature for Doodlers Anonymous which should appear in a few weeks or so. Above is our latest work for Brunch Box, a food cart here in Portland that holds the trophy for the Best Burger in Portland. We love their food and are stoked with how the tee came out. Click the pic to see all of the detail inside the design.

In addition to the zine and prints available at the show, there are two secret goodies to be found by show-goers.

The first are these super awesome hand-sewn mustache pins that were made in a lot of different colors by the awesome Shoko Saito. Friends of Jolby will be sporting them tomorrow night and the rest will be given out in some sort of random order at the show.

The second goodie is the "King & Queen" 24" x 30" print. Only 10 will be available as giveaways for the first 10 purchases on opening night. And that's a dude's butt, just in case you've been staring at it.

New Pattern

Gary Benzel (who runs Igloo, a designed-goods shop in San Diego, CA) often collaborates with Todd and together they truly make some amazing shit. &1 Everyday Shenanigans

Sorry it's been so long sine we posted anything. We both have been super busy at work and working on our zine/show. It's shaping up really nice and we are really excited to show everyone the work.

A little update on the show, we are planning on screen printing 10 pieces from the zine into posters. We are teaming up with Keegan Meegan to print the posters. They are gracious enough to help us out and we couldn't be more excited. The piece above is one of the prints from the show and what looks brown will be a sparkly gold.

Imaginary Friends

Even though we aren't done with the zine or had the show, we have already started working on our next idea of a show. We are super excited for this one because we are collaborating with Ashley Forrette a absolutely amazing photographer in Portland,OR.

The show is going to be based around imaginary friends and where they go when we grow up. We are looking for any stories, names of imaginary friends, drawings, anything really to help us dive into that world.

Tangible Giveaways

Tangible has decided to start holding daily giveaways on Twitter. Straight from the bauce:

"We have all sorts of goodies around the office -- posters, prints, toys, music, tickets, etc. -- and think that this could be a cool way for us to use this crazy service. Follow us @tangibleww to automatically be entered in our giveaways. Today we're giving away The World Needs More Stach t-shirt. Who knows what Monday will bring?

So I think I have found something that I would be happy to waste all my time doing. Tone Matrix might be the coolest thing I have ever seen on the internet. Andre Michelle is the genius behind this and should win an award for the funniest game/music maker. If you want to send something make to a friend, right click over the squares with the tones you made and copy and then all they have to do is paste over the squares. Have fun.

Josh and I are working on the first Jolby zine which will be titled "&1: Jolby all the Time" and has no release date as of yet, but we wanted to show you a sneak peak at the cover. The zine will be filled with all of the wackiness that makes Jolby what it is. Some ideas we have include fighting bananas, a truly Sickle Pickle, and killer boomerangs.

Steven Harrington, Incase, and Arkitip have teamed up once again to release an exclusive mix for your ears. Featuring hand picked tracks from Steven's personal collection, Bang-Ga-Wrong is a 45-minute mix of early Jamaican dancehall, dub and roots reggae reworked and mixed with help from Andrew Miller. While we're not the biggest fans of this style of music, its really cool to see this team up and we love the graphic on the vinyl. Check it out here.

New Work: the Graduate Tee & Tote

We just finished this tee & tote design for our good pals the Graduate that will soon be sold on their merch site and at select shows. There will be both guys and girls-colored tees as well as a the tote (black). We've been experimenting with this style of composition that's new for us. Trip out!

The Damnwells, Free and Amazing

The Damnwells have been one of my favorite bands for many years. Their debut album "Air Stereo" is still my favorite album to drive to and I could sit and listen to it for hours. As I was listening to a song yesterday while spring cleaning =( I wondered when they were touring again and discovered they just released a new album online for FREE.

The new album is titled "One Last Century" and you can download it free here. The new album stays on the same track as their last effort and is equally as good if not in ways better. I would describe them as a rock/folk/awesome but I don't really know if that is the best description. It's free so download and take a listen and then go see them live then email them and say"hey you should have Jolby do some design work for you guys". Have a good Monday.

Powell's Books now selling "Wolf Am I"

It feels pretty good to announce that Powell's Books is now selling my "Wolf Am I" zine at their Burnside location in Portland, OR. For those unfamiliar with the awesomeness of Powell's, it is the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world and occupies a full city block. Being a Portland-er myself, it's great to have this zine being carried at such a well-known book store. In other zine news, Josh is working on one right now that is sure to blow your mind and make you want to purchase a penis car. Have a good weekend.

Work in Progress: Tangible PDX Mural

For Tangible's new Portland office, Jolby is painting this mural that spans four pretty gigantic walls. In the comp (the above is just a digital comp) we wanted to include Portland things in a subtle way (like coffee, lumberjacks, flannel, trees, beer, rain, bikes, and donuts). Josh will have to get his ass to Portland from Chicago so we can paint this and rumor has it he will be riding his land-shark to get here. Go Silver Birds!

Vote Earth - Earth Hour March 28th, 2009

We don't really ever post about any politics or news on our blog (unless it's about a new typeface or something) but we felt this was something important to us and we wanted to make sure you knew and take part. This Saturday March 28th at 8:30pm local time will be Earth Hour. Put together by the WWF(not the wrestling federation) with the goal to have 1 billion households and business around the world switch off their lights for one hour to help fight global warming."Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights."

It's an hour come on switch off the lights and play wigi board or something. You know if Captain Planet were still around he would punch you in the jeans if you did help out.

Our show at Subtext ends this Sunday March 22nd to make way for our good friend Andy Holder's show, so make sure you catch "Home is Where You Make it" if you haven't stopped by. I think Josh and I spend way too much time on ffffound, and by that I mean it's an endless pit of inspiration and is constantly giving. It's interesting to watch these image bookmarking sites turn into the new hot shit. It's replaced my urge to open something like Print's Design Annual when in need of some quick stimuli. Definitely a trend to watch. Now if we could just get an invite...

We were very fortunate to have our good pal Andy Roush write and compose an original soundtrack for the show that played during the opening and looped all night. Much like our art, Andy made a lot of the sounds by hand. For instance, certain drumming sounds were made by putting a VHS tape on Andy's chest and banging it while recording the noise. The soundtrack was written in 3 parts that represent each chapter in William's journey. Check out more of Andy's fine music here.

So as you probably noticed this week we kind of lagged on posts. We decided to take it easy and let our minds and bodies relax alittle. We just got the updated pdf from Subtext with all the pieces from the show.

We will be updating our site with the full show and older work that we have done. We will also be getting a store up very soon and will be doing alot more fun prints/art/skateboards/milk cartons you know the normal stuff.

Lastly, when Colby and I first came up with the story for "Home is Where You Make it" we knew that we wanted it to be a book. And after the response at the show and online that will be our next project. As we develop it we will be posting pics and such so keep a look out for that. If you know anyone or know someone that knows someone that might know Kevin Bacon that might help us get this published we would be very grateful. Thanks and have a great weekend. We have so many people to thank for such an amazing opening night for our first solo show. The night was a blur as we jumped from person to person, walking them through the story, talking to people who bought pieces, seeing family and friends, and enjoying the vibe. It was a crowded opening all night and most of the art sold, too!
