JOLBY WORK: Happy First Year Anniversary

Monday was the first wedding anniversary for my wife and I. We went to this ridiculous restaurant called MOTO. The best thing was the exploding cocktail, a truly mind blowing experience. Anyways for a gift I decided to make a book of fun little illustrations of our first year as married couple in a new city. It turned out pretty sweet and she loved it. Crazy awesome thing is she actually wrote me a book for my gift and I illustrated a book, too cute. Have a good day oh and Colby printed the book which turned out amazing so if you live in the San Diego county please punch him for me. Here are a couple of spreads you can go to my site to see more. Thanks

D&AD Judges Selected no Pieces of Graphic Design for Awards this Year.

Wow: "While an unprecedented six Golds were handed out at last night's D&AD awards, the Graphic Design section produced just two nominations and no pencils." Meaning that the judges found no entries worthy enough for a top-notch award like this in the category of Graphic Design. What happened? Great discussion about this here.

Colby Work: More Paper Sailing

Corey, the lead singer of The Graduate and long-time pursuer of all things Jolby, asked me to make him a paper sailing piece and I did so thusly. It looks a lot like the first one I did that I posted not long ago, except more flags were added and lot more curling/wind-blown-action. The piece was framed in a shadow box for room and is called, "We're Sailing 2: Captain Warning & the Robo Wizards." Im not sure how many more of these I'll do, but they're fun. Happy Friday!

Sketchle Extended!

Hey everybody. Josh and I have decided to push back this week's Sketchle "Strange Seeing You Here" until next week. So keep creating and posting! It's been a busy week for us and I'm getting over a nasty case of vertigo that seems to be on its way out. So keep posting in the Sketchle Weekly topic below and we'll reveal our favorite next Friday the 23rd.

BANDS THAT WILL ROCK YOUR FACE: What Made Milwaukee Famous

So one of my best friends back home in Cali got satellite radio for his birthday and won't stop calling me and telling how amaazzzingggg it is and all the endless possibilities of new bands you can find. I tell him every time, I buy cd's and will not buy into this satellite radio he speaks of. But I do have to say he told me about a band he found and I can't stop listening to them. If you haven't heard of What Made Milwaukee Famous then you should go to their myspace and let your ears have a party. Really cool sound and the artwork has a nice feel to it. I will definitely be picking up the cd where I can listen to all the songs not just one ( that's for all you satellite radio people). Have a good day

JOLBY WORK: Sketchle Weekly

Ok so Colby and I came with idea that we wanted to have something that people could post funny/interesting/whatever sketches on the blog. So we came up with Sketchle Weekly. Sketchle is a weekly challenge to anyone that wants to have a good time and make some funny drawings/illustration/doodles whatever you can come with based on a quote that Colby or I will post weekly. Here's how it works: Jolby will post a Sketchle Weekly topic on a Friday. You then have until the following Thursday night to post your Sketchle Weekly contribution inside that week's thread. Colby and I will then select the best Sketchles and will post our winner on the front page with credits, chest beats, praises, plugging the work, etc. Since this is the first one we wanted to give it some time so we are posting today so you basically have a week and a half to do anything your little heart wants. So the first one is - "Strange Seeing You Here" Go!!

Artists We Love: Marian Bantjes

In short, Marian Bantjes is a a hand-type master. Everything she does is math-ed out to the exact degree and then executed with precision. Her client list is beyond impressive and includes lots of projects with Stefan Sagmeister. I recently found her speaking event at Walker Art Center that is a must-see. Also, go here to find other speaking events at Walker featuring Ed Fella, Project Projects, Michael Bierut, Chip Kidd (woo), Wink, and others. Get inspired.

Jolby Work: Automatic Satisfaction

We are proud to be able to show you a project that we've been working on for some time now. Automatic Satisfaction is a clothing label that came to Jolby for an identity treatment and some tees, but we ended up designing their entire collection for their debut season. The logotype was hand-crafted for AS with their mascot, "Tweet" hanging out up top. Sure to be an awesome collection and more work to come from these guys that are amazing to work with.

Ziney Zim Zam

A few days ago, I went to watch Mark Murphy speak in Downtown San Diego at an AIGA event. The event was incredible and everything he said really hit home for me. The thing that I left with was basically this: If you want something, drop everything and make it happen or else it won't. So, for the longest time I've wanted to make a zine and I started on it last night.

It's probably going to be pretty raw and just a spatter of ideas, but I'm excited to throw myself into it even though I don't have the time to really do it right. It just needs to get done! I'll post pages as I draw them and my only teaser is that it has something to do with 'the wolf.' Definitely expect some Jolby team up inside as well. Happy Friday.
