"Home Is Where You Make It" Jolby's First Solo Art Show Announcement

"Home Is Where You Make It" New Works by Jolby (Josh Kenyon & Colby Nichols)

February 21st - March 22nd Opening Reception: Saturday, February 21st, 6-10pm at Subtext Gallery in San Diego, CA.

In their first solo show, Jolby’s work takes us on the journey of a boy named William who, after suffering a great loss, leaves his familiar town of Seaside to discover what “home” really means inside the depths of an aging forest. Throughout this story we are introduced to a detailed world filled with odd characters, illustrious patterns, vibrant colors, and hand-rendered type. The show tells this imaginative story using a variety of mediums including screen prints, paintings, drawings, and even detailed handmade plush dolls contributed by Jill and Erin Lynch’s (Dolls for Friends). Reflecting on their recent life experiences, the “Home is Where You Make it” story has been inspired by the artists’ pasts and deals with love, hope, depression, faith, isolation, acceptance, and re-birth.

Josh Kenyon and Colby Nichols have been labeled “the illustrative monster that is Jolby” and have been working together on various projects since their first collaboration in 2005. The two combine their talents through Colby’s obsession with drawing creatures and shapes while adding Josh’s love for pattern and texture to create a look that is purely “Jolby.”

Above is our first piece tentatively-titled "Once More". More info on Subtext's blog. We will be posting updates of this show until it opens in Feb and we are very excited to be sharing this with you.

Music That Will Blow Your Mind: Anathallo "Canopy Glow"

Yesterday, Anathallo released their latest album titled Canopy Glow. It seems that every album these talented musicians create one-ups their previous efforts which is nothing short of amazing. Canopy Glow is brilliant story-telling through an eclectic mix of sounds and instruments that will truly blow your mind. If we were going to recommend to you something new to do this week, we would recommend spending some time with this album.

SISA Zine

So I have been working really hard on finishing my zine so I can start on Jolby's first show. Here is the cover of the zine which is called SISA. Sisa is Balinese for "balance" and is the theme for the zine. It's illustrations(by me) and words(by my wife) about the inspiration of finding balance in Bali.

Daytum: Organize Your Data

We are definite fans of Nicholas Felton (Feltron) and when we saw he was allowing the rest of us to organize our daily consumptions and doings online via his inspired look we peed a little. I've been messing around a bit with Daytum and it's proven to be a lot of fun and well put together. They are currently giving out beta invites to those interested.

BANDS THAT WILL ROCK YOUR FACE: Emery's New EP

I believe this is the first time we have posted about a band twice, but it's is worth it I promise. Emery is a rock band that has a little bit of everything. Colby and I have been fans of this band for many years and we both agree that what we have heard from there new EP "While Broken Hearts Prevail" sounds like that best album yet. You can listen to two new songs on their purevolume page. I would suggest listening to "The Smile, The Face" first, it's a great representation of the bands sound and the screaming in it is amazing. Buy the cd don't steal it.

Parra X Incase X Arkitip

Parra, Amsterdam-based illustrator of awesomeness, shows off his new collab with Arkitip and Incase where they produced a iPhone case and 15" MacBook case with his art. Check the video for a nice dose of Monday inspiration. Always great to get inside the heads of other artists.
